There are a couple of musical artist out there that started their musical career as a song writer before they started singing and later become popular. Many people do not know that these artists started off as songwriters. Here is a list of ten songwriters you probably already know as artists.

Bruno Mars

He moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career in the mid 2000s, the Hawaiian-born Mars (born Peter Gene Hernandez) founded songwriting and producing team The Smeezingtons in 2009. In couple with Ari Levine and Philip Lawrence, Mars co-wrote Nothin’ on You for the rapper BoB and provided vocals for the song, which became number one in America. The three of them wrote Mars’s hits Just the Way You Are and Grenade, Travie McCoy’s Billionaire (on which Mars also features) and the 2010 smash hit F--- You by Cee-Lo Green.

 

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga begin her career in the world of songwriting and music publishing. After leaving school at NYU in 2007, she worked as an intern for Famous Music Publishing. The company was later bought by Sony/ATV where she was signed is as a songwriter. Before her break out single, “Pokerface”, Lady Gaga wrote songs for many artistes including Britney Spears and New Kids On the Block.

 

Ed Sheeran

Sheeran started as a songwriter, Sheeran has written and co-written songs for Taylor Swift and One Direction, including the boy band’s single Little Things which has shifted over a million copies. Sheeran claims to write over 60 songs for his album x, none of which he found suitable for the finished product.

 

Ryan Tedder

Ryan Tedder which is also known as the lead singer of One Republic, the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and producer Ryan Tedder has written songs for the likes of Beyoncé, U2 and Adele, as well as writing Ella Henderson’s chart topping debut single, Ghost. He wrote 2007’s Apologize, which was performed by One Republic, and became the most played song on American radio.

 

Sia

The 39-year-old’s illustrious songwriting career includes hits penned for the likes of Kylie Minogue, Beyoncé, Celine Dion and Rita Ora but her biggest donated hit to date is Rihanna’s Diamonds, the lyrics to which Sia claims she wrote in just 14 minutes.

 

Stevie Wonder

Stevland Hardaway Judkins got signed as a songwriter to Motown records - at age 11 – then later performed his own song "Lonely Boy" to Ronnie White of the Miracles. Wonder started touring at 12 and co-wrote a lot of his hits, including "I Was Made To Love Her", "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours.".

 

Elton John

Sir Elton Hercules John CBE is an English singer, songwriter, composer, pianist, record producer, and occasional actor. He has worked with lyricist Bernie Taupin as his songwriter partner since 1967; they have collaborated on more than 30 albums to date

 

Taylor Swift

In 2004, at the age of 14, Taylor Swift was hired as a staff writer for Sony/ATV Publishing House. She was the youngest among the staff writer. She co-wrote with many of her songwriters and honed her craft before releasing her first hit “Tim McGraw” in the summer of 2008.

 

Kacey Musgraves

Before winning Grammy’s for hits such as “Merry Go Round” and “Blowing Smoke”, KaceyMusgraves was a songwriter. Before signing with Mercury Records in 2012, she signed a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell and went on to write hits for Martina Mcbride and Miranda Lambert

 

 Kesha

At the age of 18, Kesha Rose Sebert, now known as Kesha moved to Los Angeles and signed a publishing deal as a songwriter with Dr Luke’s “Prescription Songs”. Before her “Tick Tock” fame, As well as working as a backing vocalist, Kesha wrote many commercially released songs including “This Love”, by Australian group The Veronicas, and “Disgusting” by Nickelodeon star Miranda Cosgrove.
